Westport Gran Fondo 13th April 2019

Westport welcomed over 500 cyclists who braved extremely tough weather conditions to take part in the 4th annual Westport Gran Fondo event.

A one day event and the first of its kind in the Republic of Ireland, Westport Gran Fondo  mixes peoples love of cycling with the social aspect of the beautiful town of Westport in the heart of the Wild Atlantic Way.  There are 2 events ; Gran Fondo at 126km and Medio Fondo at 74km. Both events are timed and include the Sheffrey Mountains which is one of the most iconic climbs in the country.

The event brought hundreds of competitors and their families into Westport for the weekend.

First man over the line in an exciting photo finish was Padraig Marrey from Marrey Bikes in a time of 3:39:25.   The tough gruelling 126km course took the Ballinrobe native through an intense journey from Westport into the beautiful village of Leenane, past the Killary Fjord, into Tullycross and back into Letterfrack.  From there he took the difficult ascent up the iconic Sheffry climb, with a very fast descent into Drummin and flew back into Westport Town to finish at the Quay.

First Gran Fondo Lady over the line was  local girl Hilary Hughes from the  Covey Wheelers who completed the course in a record breaking time.    The Medio Event in the mens section also had a photo finish for the top 3 with Bryan Hyland from Covey Wheelers taking the honours for first prize.
